DH.83C Fox Moth ‘Foxy’

One of the great aircraft from aviation's 'Golden Age', the de Havilland DH.83 Fox Moth was a surprise to the industry as it demonstrated its impressive efficiency when first flown in January 1932. One clever aspect of the Fox Moth was its use of Tiger Moth wings and tail group, coupled with a purpose built fuselage designed for carrying passengers in cabin comfort whilst the pilot sat in his (originally) open cockpit behind them. A total of 102 Fox Moths were completed before WW-II however, production started again in Canada post-war, taking advantage of the countless available Tiger Moth parts associated with flight training for the war effort. This allowed de Havilland Canada to produce new, yet proven, practical and capable bush planes at very low cost. A further 53 were built in Canada and Omaka's resident example ZK-APT is one from this production.

This aircraft was in fact purchased new by the Marlborough Aero Club in 1947 and after a lifetime of adventures around New Zealand, including a total restoration, it was acquired by local enthusiasts Paul and Pip Hally and brought back to its original home right here at Omaka! Their PMH Aviation offers vintage scenic flights in this very special aeroplane providing a rare opportunity for visitors to enjoy a unique view of this picturesque region from the air, and from a stylish and comfortable vintage time machine!
